Thank you "Cabal" for your most accurate comments, my wife and I appreciate them. It shows you have a healthy respect for the minorities in France and a very good sense of humour. You may tease us as much as you like – please smile!!!

As we are indigenous Bretons from Breizh-Izel, we feel, in our hearts, first and foremost Breton, then French, even our Carte Identité and passport show our nationality as Breton/Bretonne (Français), our Permis de Conduite (Driving Licence) is bi-lingual – with Brezhoneg (Breton) as the premier language. We would have it no other way as our forbearers are one of the oldest civilizations in Europe. We are a tenacious, hard-working people who get what we want and will go to the n’th degree to get it. If that means we “fight” with our government then so be it. Even Presidents of France have a healthy respect for us; unfortunately one of our previous presidents found out the hard way when he addressed us, telling us that there was only one language in France, French. Sad man, wondered why we caused chaos on the west coast of France the following day!!!

We have two very good mottos:

1. You want to “fight” with us, how much can you afford to pay for that “fight”?

2. It’s you today, but it could be me tomorrow.

We are a nation without a state.

Well I would assume people from Brittany would consider themselves French since Brittany is in France.

Welsh people don't consider themselves English because Wales and England are two different countries, whereas Brittany is an administrative region of France.

Some make it a point to say that they are Bretons, not French because 600 years ago Brittany was independant and Anne's wishes on her death bed were not respected (none of our kings wishes were ever respected when they died but the Bretons seem to take it personnally).

However, you will find more Bretons living in Paris than in Britanny. So I guess that a majority of Bretons do consider themselves French. French Breton, but French.

:D Jean Michel. Sorry if I have offended you, however I'll point out that Bretons dish out much, much worse on the rest of France. You should hear what my friends dish back on my Provençal roots and my Parisian status. On a less pleasant note the festival of Lorient was the only place where I was told quite abruptly that I had no right to listen to a singer because I was not Breton. If I understand and have nothing against Britanny's desire to keep its roots and language alive I do not consider it a foreign state.

Yes, I suppose people from Brittany consider themselves French, much more than people from the Basque Country or Corsica for instance.

On my administrative side I'm french, but on my roots and feelings's side, I'm breton. When I'm going abroad I say "I'm french", but I always add to this "but from the west part, the french far west, Bretagne" what means that in my mind i'm not only french and don't wantto be consider as just a french !

You will also meet breton people who just don't care about Bretagne, some other who would fight to be independent...

What happens if you ask a native if he is american, or an aborigine if he is australian ? Probably the same than if you ask to a breton if he is french.

Wales is a different country than England. So of course they don't consider themselves as english. Do americans consider themselves as english? I don't think so.

Brittany is a french region, one of the 26 regions in France. They are not less french than people living in Martinique or Marseille, etc.

Of course Brittany people considered themselves as french because they're part of France and they know French language. This question seems to be lame at all.
